Transitioning from your original culture to a new part of the world can be difficult. It is also a life changing experience, even if for only a short period of time. There are several types of things different people go through when transitioning from one major cultural area to a new one. I speak about this from personal experience. Culture shock is a relatively short-term feeling of disorientation and discomfort due to the lack of familiar cues in the environment. (Martin & Nakayama, 2012) Refugees likely experience the the worst of culture shock. They are already in a situation they do not want to be in and are fleeing to get away from a horrible situation. They are forced to leave what they know and enter a new life they never thought they might live. Refugees sometimes might try to keep from interacting with local culture, but they are still in an undesirable situation either way.
One part of moving from one area of the world to another that can cause difficulty are language barriers. Moving to a place that speaks a language you do not understand is difficult. Now when you go to a grocery store, it can be very difficult to find the things you need. The shock of finding such a basic task to be difficult can be great. It can be hard to learn how to get the things you need for your daily life and this can be discouraging. In "Lincoln community home to refugees from around the world" they talk about programs in place in Lincoln that help refugees get through this transition. They provide courses in English so they can learn the necessary language to survive. A service like this is invaluable to refugees settling in Lincoln.
The other important thing for refugees is to seek employment. This can be difficult with the language barrier in the picture. It can be stressful to be looking for a job. Obtaining gainful employment is one of the most important things for a refugee to do. Any assistance they get help them through their transition and ease the shock of the abrupt changes in lifestyle.

Refugees must all experience some level of culture shock. They are in a situation that no one wants to be in and are then put into a completely different world and expected to survive. The new things around them can be shocking. The way people interact with them change and they must learn how to communicate with the new community they are living in before they will become comfortable in their new home.
